A one-day sensitization programme on “Empowering Women to Combat Drug Abuse and Addiction” was held today, at the Community Hall of Nungthang Tampak Village in Samulamlan Block of Churachandpur district. The programme was jointly organised by the Manipur State Commission for Women and the Nungthang Tampak Youth Welfare Organization.
The event was attended by Th. Tiningpham Monsang, Chairperson of the Manipur State Commission for Women; Sk. Sophia Moyon, Member of the Commission; M. Jonathan Kom, MCS, Sub-Divisional Officer of Samulamlan; and M. Mangpu Kom, Vice President of the Samulamlan Block Chief Association, who were part of the presidium. Thuansinlung Kamei, Project Coordinator of Sneha Bhavan, Imphal, and T. Chuongsin Koireng, former Member of the Commission, served as resource persons. Around 100 participants, including men, women and youths from Nungthang Tampak village and nearby Sangang area, attended the programme.
The programme aimed to create awareness on the dangers of drug abuse and addiction, with special focus on empowering women to identify early signs of substance abuse within families and communities. It also highlighted the role of women in prevention, counselling and rehabilitation, while promoting a supportive and stigma-free approach.
In her welcome address, Sk. Sophia Moyon stressed the need for collective efforts by women, families and local organisations to tackle drug abuse and encouraged open discussion on the issue. Th. Tiningpham Monsang highlighted the rising cases of drug abuse in society and underlined the crucial role of women in prevention and early intervention.
