Imphal, Aug 28:

The proscribed umbrella organization Coordination Committee (CorCom) has paid homage to freedom fighter Haipu Jadonang on arrival of his 90th death anniversary.
In a statement, CorCom expressed that Haipou Jadonang was such a freedom fighter who fought against the mighty Colonial British to create a sovereign Makan Gwangdi. The British, having colonized Manipur in 1891, started several atrocities throughout the state. Haipou Jadonang revolted against the British with the sole objective of creating a sovereign nation. This freedom fighter tried to create a sovereign Makan Gwangdi after driving out the British.
It was a firm belief of Haipou Jadonang that people could be safeguarded from the British brutalities and the age-old indigenous culture and identity of Zeliangrong Community could be preserved if a sovereign nation is created from the hands of the British, stated a statement publicity committee of CorCom.
Haipou Jadonang was born in the Malangmei family of Rongmei Community at Puilon (kambiron) Tamenglong in 1905. The freedom fighter was the third son of Thiudai Malangmei and Tabonliu Dangmei. He was a great son of Zeliangrong who tried to promote the society, religious faith and culture by bringing unity among Zeme, Liangmei and Rongmei communities to launch a Heraka movement. Among the tribal communities in Kangleipak, Jadonang was the first freedom fighter who pledged to liberate the Zeliangrong community from the colonial British, it maintained. His message of creating a sovereign Makan Gwangdi was spread far and wide, igniting the Zeliangrong inhabited areas.
He also visited the Zeliangrong inhabited areas in Manipur, Assam and Nagaland and mobilized Zeliangrong Armies to fight against the British. He fought against the various atrocities under the British and the King, slavery system like Pothang Puba, Pothang Senkhai, Yarek sentry etc.
He was a pioneer who fought for equal human rights. For defying the orders of the British rule, he was arrested by North West Sub-Division SDO SJ. Duncan in 1928 and later incarcerated in a jail in Tamenglong for a week.
The CorCom appealed to the general public of both hills and valley to work united to restore the sovereignty of Manipur (Kangleipak).
