An offence has been registered against 158 people for not adhering to physical distancing norms, during the funeral of one of the office bearers of “Raza Academy” , who died at Dongri in South Mumbai, on Wednesday night.
Over 250 persons took out a funeral procession before burial and mingled freely with each other. Barring one or two, most of them did not wear a face mask and did not adhere to “physical distancing norms” in view of the COVID-19 pandemic, the police said and added that as of now, the offence has been registered against 158 people and more information is being collected about the others.
There are over 40 containment zones and the entire Mumbai and Navi Mumbai falls in Red Zone. As such not more than 5 persons are allowed to be present at the cremation site/ burial ground, for the last rites of the COVID-19 patients. Besides, there is restriction even on the number of persons attending routine funerals. The number of persons permitted to attend the funeral is also specified by the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). However the BMC officials and police find it difficult to implement these rules in most of the minority dominated areas like Mankhurd in North East Mumbai and also in areas of South Central Mumbai like Nagpada, Madanpura, which was a hot bed of non-stop anti-CAA agitations few months back.
