The National Sports University (NSU), Manipur has announced plans to shift to its permanent campus at Koutruk in Imphal West district by August 2026, alongside preparations to observe its 8th Foundation Day on Friday at Khuman Lampak.
Addressing a press conference at the Manipur Olympic Association Conference Hall, NSU Vice-Chancellor Dr Shyam Sundar Rath said that Hari Ranjan Rao, Secretary, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS), Government of India, will attend the function as the Chief Guest. Dr Shobhit Jain, Joint Secretary (Policy), MYAS, and Olympic medalist N. Kunjurani Devi will be present as Guests of Honour.
As part of the celebrations, the university will felicitate Olympians and Arjuna Award recipients and honour three sports scientists. Awards will also be conferred on four athletes, including two master athletes who competed in the Asian Championships and two boxers, in recognition of their achievements.
On the proposed shift to the permanent campus at Koutruk in Imphal West district, Dr Rath informed that the relocation is planned for August 2026. He said major infrastructure works, including administrative and academic blocks, hostels and sports facilities, have already been completed.
Highlighting academic expansion, the Vice-Chancellor said NSU currently offers two undergraduate and four postgraduate programmes and is set to introduce new M.Sc courses in Sports Biomechanics, Exercise Physiology, Sports Performance Analysis, and Strength and Conditioning. He added that advanced sports laboratories and a High Performance Centre will also be established to strengthen teaching, research and athlete development.
Dr Rath further stated that the university is increasingly focusing on research, with faculty and students actively engaged in studies at undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD levels in areas such as Physical Education, Sports Coaching, Sports Physiology, Sports Nutrition and Sports Psychology.
He also said NSU plans to organise national-level seminars and practical workshops for coaches, directors of physical education and school physical education teachers to enhance practical skills and sports science knowledge.
Providing details of the existing temporary campus, the Vice-Chancellor said the university currently has 338 students but is constrained by limited hostel facilities and space. He noted that the lack of adequate infrastructure and advanced laboratories has delayed the launch of specialised courses, a shortcoming that is expected to be addressed once NSU shifts to its fully developed main campus.
