The NSCN/GPRN led by Yung Aung and the ULFA-Independent have jointly called for a boycott of the Indian Republic Day celebrations scheduled on January 26, 2026, across the WESEA region, comprising parts of North-east India.
In a joint statement, the two outfits said that the Republic Day observance in the region was being imposed under heavy security deployment and described it as an attempt to project Indian nationalism in what they termed an occupied territory. The groups claimed that the peoples of WESEA did not join the Indian Union voluntarily and alleged that the region was annexed by force.
The statement further alleged that January 26 represented, for the people of the region, a symbol of political domination and military suppression rather than democratic values. The outfits also claimed that the prevailing political and economic systems had resulted in marginalisation and insecurity among minority communities.
The NSCN/GPRN (YA) and ULFA-I appealed to the people of the region to refrain from participating in Republic Day celebrations as a mark of protest. They stated that the boycott call would be effective in the states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Manipur.
The joint statement appealed for unity and continued support for what the groups described as their collective political struggle.
