North East Doctor assaulted at AIMS, Gorakhpur; Naga doctors demand swift action

Even as outrage continues over the recent racial abuse of two young women from Arunachal Pradesh in New Delhi, another disturbing case of alleged racial violence against a medical professional from the North East has surfaced — this time in Gorakhpur.
A third-year resident doctor from Nagaland, currently serving at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Gorakhpur, was reportedly stalked, racially abused and physically assaulted by a group of individuals near Gate No. 2 of the institute campus. According to reports, the doctor was followed for more than a kilometre and a half, subjected to obscene remarks and racial slurs targeting her Northeastern identity, and later physically attacked.
The incident has triggered sharp condemnation from the All Naga Doctors’ Forum, Manipur (ANDFM), which described the act as heinous and deeply disturbing. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Forum stated that such acts of stalking, racial targeting and physical violence are not only criminal offences but also a direct assault on the constitutional guarantees of dignity, equality and safety.
The Forum expressed solidarity with the victim, stating that medical professionals dedicate their lives to serving humanity irrespective of region, race, religion or ethnicity. It termed the incident profoundly disheartening, particularly as it involved a doctor committed to patient care within an institution of national importance.
Calling for immediate and decisive action, the Forum urged the concerned authorities to conduct a swift, impartial and transparent investigation, identify and arrest the perpetrators without delay, and initiate strict legal proceedings under relevant provisions pertaining to assault against women and racial discrimination. It also called for enhanced security arrangements within and around the campus to prevent recurrence of similar incidents.
The Forum asserted that racial discrimination and gender-based violence have no place in a civilised society and warned that repeated incidents targeting people from the North East reflect a troubling pattern that demands serious institutional and governmental intervention.
Reiterating its demand for justice and accountability, the All Naga Doctors’ Forum, Manipur declared that it stands united against racism, violence and discrimination in any form, and will continue to pursue the matter until appropriate action is taken.
