The Justice for Fair Delimitation (JFD) kept up its protest against the proposed Census exercise in Manipur through a sit-in demonstration held today at Thangmeiband in front of the Nongchup Gate of D.M. College.
Protesters holding banners displaying the slogan “No NRC, No Census” called for the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur prior to the conduct of the Census exercise.
The protesters insisted that the conduct of the Census without an NRC would be detrimental to the State, especially when the matter of undocumented migration, changes in demographic structure and a fair delimitation process is under consideration.
JFD has been making efforts to get the implementation of NRC prior to the Census, as per the organization, an updated NRC is essential to determine the true demographic structure of the State.
The sit-in was attended by members and supporters of JFD who shouted slogans and showed placards to highlight their demand.
The JFD Student Wing also staged a protest outside the Directorate of Census Operations, Manipur, at Porompat, opposing the ongoing Census-related activities.
The protestors reportedly attempted to lock the office, but security personnel prevented them from doing so. The protesters said they would continue their sit-in outside the Directorate and would obstruct census-related activities from Monday.
The JFD Student Wing has been carrying out a series of protests and has announced a boycott of the ongoing house-listing exercise.
