NEFIS stages protest rally at MU demanding Anti Sexual Harassment Committee in MU

North East Forum for International Solitary (NEFIS) today under the aegis of MUSU staged a protest rally inside Manipur University (MU) Campus demanding setting up of effective Anti Sexual Harassment Committee in MU.

Speaking to media persons, member of NEFIS Manipur Unit Khumukcham Chinglen stressed the need to have an effective Anti Sexual Harassment Committee for MU as in other Universities in the country.

He said that as per the guidelines of Supreme Court, such Committee is a must for every university of the nation and unfortunately as in the case of Manipur University the committee exists only in paper.

“When a student inside the university was sexually harassed there is no place or room for the students to file complaint inside the university”, he continued.

Chinglen further highlighted that many of the women suffered and hide their suffering denying justice till today.

He added that they will not allow women to be suppressed and sexual harassment should be removed from the face of the earth. 

Later the protestors marched starting in front of Linguistics Department and move towards the administrator office of MU and then meet with the administrator Jarnail Singh. More than thousands signatures collected through signature campaign was also given to the administrator. 

After meeting with the administrator a protestor identified as H Reema Chanu asserted that the administrator agreed to fulfill their demands of forming effective anti harassment committees in MU involving female students in the said committee and also to make aware of such committee by uploading in the website.

She further added that the administrator also assured to extend the opening hour of the library and also extend the curfew of ladies hostels till 9 o’clock at night.

Reema concluded that the administrator assured to fulfill their demands within 15 days.
