MU students burn copy of Citizen Amendment Bill

Students of Manipur University burnt the copies of Citizen Amendment bill 2019 inside the varsity campus. As a part of the agitation against the passing of the bill in the Lok Sabha, the students also staged a sit-in-protest at the coffee corner inside the campus varsity.

Speaking to media persons, Keisham Lebanan a research scholar said that they strongly condemn the passing of the bill in the Lok Sabha. He added that if the government gives assent it will affect the whole indigenous people residing in the Northeast which will lead to the extinction of the indigenous people. He said that if the said unconstitutional Bill is passed there will not be any use of the Manipur People Protection Bill which has been waiting to give assent by the President to be an Act.

Supplementing the statement, Yumnam James a student appealed the government to stand against such an unconstitutional bill like their fellow leaders of the North East. He urges the members of the Rajya Sabha from Manipur also to vote against the bill

Students’ raise slogans saying Manipur’s integrity should only be guarded by its indigenous people and also the Citizen Amendment Bill 2016 cannot apply their laws to Manipur.

It can be mention that yesterday also students of the varsity burnt the bill and protested outside the campus.
