MU commemorates 28th death anniversary of GC Tongbra

The 28th death anniversary of the esteemed literary figure Padmashree GC Tongbra was commemorated today at the Centenary Hall, Manipur University. The event, organized by The Society Theatre, Manipur, in collaboration with the Manipuri Department of Manipur University, saw a gathering of eminent scholars, students, and admirers of Tongbra’s work.
Naorem Lokendra Singh, Vice Chancellor of Manipur University, graced the event as the Chief Guest, while Loitongbam Birjita Devi, Head of the Manipuri Department, and Soibam Imoba Singh, Dean of the School of Humanities, served as President and Guest of Honour, respectively. Kangabam Tomba Singh, Director of The Society Theatre, Manipur, also attended as a Guest of Honour.
Shreekanta Potsangbam, Secretary of The Society Theatre, Manipur, delivered a warm welcome address. A floral tribute to Oja G.C. Tongbra followed, honoring his contributions to Manipuri literature.
In his speech, Kangabam Tomba Singh praised GC Tongbra’s satirical writing, highlighting his importance as a literary figure deeply influenced by George Bernard Shaw, a noted socialist. Tomba remarked, “GC Tongbra’s works delve into various aspects of social life in Manipur, using satire to address and critique societal issues effectively.”
The Chief Guest, Naorem Lokendra Singh, emphasized the enduring relevance of G.C. Tongbra’s writings in contemporary society, while Loitongbam Birjita Devi and Soibam Imoba Singh spoke about his literary legacy and his impact on Manipuri culture.
The event concluded with the presentation of the play “Ngabongkhao,” which captivated the audience and underscored the lasting influence of GC Tongbra’s literary genius.
