The Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF) observed its 28th Foundation Day at its headquarters in Kwakeithel Thounajam Leikai, with speakers highlighting the need to protect and promote Manipuri language and preserve the state’s cultural identity.
The programme was attended by Soraisam Mercha Leima, president of Pairei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur; Sorukhaibam Sanjay, president of the All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO); Dr Lamabam Mahendra, president of the Thounaojam Leikai Development Association (THLDA); Khundrakpam Ashikumar, secretary of the Council of Higher Secondary Education, Manipur; Moirangthem Binod Meitei, administrator of the Manipur Millennium Foundation; and Kh. Ratankumar, chairman of R.B. Academy, Lamsang.
MSF president Hijam Roshan presided over the function. The federation also paid tribute to deceased individuals who had made significant contributions to MSF. A voluntary blood donation camp was organised in connection with the Foundation Day observance.
Addressing the gathering, Hijam Roshan said Manipuri language and culture had played a significant role in establishing Manipur’s identity, but expressed concern that the language was not receiving adequate institutional support.
He alleged that the government’s approach towards Manipuri had contributed to its neglect, particularly in the education sector. He pointed out that recruitment processes for teaching posts in schools and colleges often failed to provide adequate importance to Manipuri language, raising concerns over opportunities for qualified Manipuri-language teachers.
Roshan also questioned the implementation of the Manipur Official Language Act, 1979, alleging that its provisions were not being effectively enforced beyond their formal recognition. He said the failure to implement the law properly undermined efforts to strengthen the language and ensure its continued use among younger generations.
Calling for concrete measures to safeguard Manipuri, the MSF president urged the government to ensure effective implementation of the Official Language Act and strengthen the teaching and promotion of the language in educational institutions.
He stressed that preserving Manipuri language and culture was essential to protecting Manipur’s identity and called for greater institutional commitment to ensuring that the language received the recognition and support it deserved.
