The Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF) has demanded immediate and decisive action from the central and state governments to address racism and ensure the safety of students from Northeast India, following the killing of a Tripura student in Uttarakhand.
Referring to the death of Angel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student from Tripura, the federation said he was allegedly assaulted in Dehradun on 09 December 2025 and later succumbed to his injuries on 26 December 2025. According to the MSF, the attack involved the use of racial slurs and multiple stab wounds. The organisation cited the victim’s family as alleging that the assailants were intoxicated and targeted him because of his physical appearance.
In a statement, the MSF said the incident underscored the persistent problem of racism, discrimination, and hatred faced by people from Northeast India in other parts of the country. It said such acts were unacceptable in a democratic society and required firm intervention by the authorities.
The federation urged the Prime Minister, the Union Home Minister, and the Uttarakhand Chief Minister to ensure the immediate arrest of all those involved and the initiation of strict legal action. It further called upon the central government to implement special protective measures for students and residents from the Northeast who live or pursue education outside the region.
The MSF said that people from the Northeast continue to face racial abuse, stereotyping, and social exclusion because of their physical features, creating an environment that often leads to hate crimes and physical violence. It stated that the persistence of such discrimination posed a serious threat to social harmony.
Stating that students are the future of the nation, the federation said safeguarding their safety, dignity, and well-being was a fundamental responsibility of the government. It expressed hope that concrete steps would be taken to prevent similar incidents and to ensure a safe and secure environment for students from Northeast India across the country.
