MSAP, NECOP flag racial discrimination, safety concerns of Northeast people in Pune

The Manipur Students’ Association, Pune (MSAP) and the North East Community Organization Pune (NECOP) have raised concerns over persistent racial discrimination, harassment and safety challenges faced by people from Northeast India living in Pune.

In a joint press statement issued today, the organisations said people from the Northeast continue to face prejudice and social exclusion based on their physical appearance, cultural practices, food habits and lifestyles, despite the country’s constitutional commitment to unity in diversity.

Highlighting the vulnerability of women from the region, the organisations alleged that they face racial profiling, public scrutiny and various forms of verbal and physical harassment, restricting their freedom and sense of security. Men from the Northeast, too, are reportedly subjected to racial slurs, verbal abuse and physical harassment.

The organisations observed that Pune, being a major educational and professional hub, attracts thousands of students and young professionals from the Northeast in search of better opportunities. However, recurring incidents of discrimination have left many feeling alienated and unsafe despite the city’s cosmopolitan image.

Calling for collective action, MSAP and NECOP appealed to civil society organisations, educational institutions, local authorities and the public to address racial stereotypes, promote inclusivity and ensure a safe and dignified environment for people from the Northeast.
