Manipur Students’ Association Delhi (MSAD) has stated that the demand for 4% reservation of the Meitei Pangal in the category of the Other Backward Classes for admission to various courses in the higher studies in Manipur is democratic.
A statement by MSAD Magazine Secretary Leimapokpam Chanu Lanchenbi stated that—vide Office Memorandum, Government of Manipur, dated 27th December, 2006— the Meitei Pangals have been enjoying 4% reservation in the category of the OBCs for appointment in Government posts/ service (including Government Societies/ Public Undertakings/ Boards/ Agencies) and also for admission in professional courses in professional College / Institutes such as Engineering/ Medical/ Polytechnic/ Veterinary & Animal Husbandry/ Agricultural Sciences/ Nursing/ para-medical, etc. The Joint Body Meeting, therefore, considered that the long pending demand of the Meitei Pangal for a fixed percentage of reservation in the OBC category for admission to various courses in the higher studies should be fulfilled at the earliest by the Government of Manipur, so that no community is left to feel institutionally discriminated and underprivileged.
The MSAD statement further said that there were irregularities or anomalies in the selection of candidates for admission to various undergraduate courses in the colleges under the Dhanamanjuri University, Manipur. These irregularities or anomalies should be rectified. An enquiry should be instituted against it. Actions should be taken up against those staffs responsible for the irregularities or anomalies.
The student body demanded to put on halt the ongoing admission process conducted by the Dhanamanjuri University, Manipur until the concurrent controversy and the demand of the Meitei Pangal, as pointed above, have not been fully addressed.
It added that 4% reservation in service sectors is insignificant without the same in education sectors. Any democratic demand by a section of the population should not be left alone.
