Members of the Manipur Pradesh Youth Congress Committee were stopped by police personnel while attempting to take out a rally from Congress Bhavan on Saturday. A large number of security personnel were deployed at the gate, preventing the protesters from proceeding further.
The protest was organised against the arrest of Indian Youth Congress president Uday Bhanu Chib and other Youth Congress members in New Delhi. The arrests followed a demonstration during the Global AI Summit, where the Youth Congress had objected to the display of a Chinese AI robot, describing it as a matter affecting national interest.
Speaking to reporters at the protest site, Manipur Pradesh Youth Congress Committee president Anand Wahengbam termed the arrests unjustified and criticised the response of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha and the BJP Mahila Morcha. He alleged that the two BJP wings had issued statements targeting the Congress party without understanding the purpose of the protest.
Anand Wahengbam stated that the Youth Congress demonstration was intended to safeguard the country’s reputation and urged the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha and the BJP Mahila Morcha to appreciate the context of the agitation.
The Manipur Pradesh Youth Congress Committee further alleged that while the BJP wings reacted strongly to what it described as a minor incident in Delhi, they had not organised protests against the ongoing crisis in Manipur, which it said had resulted in loss of lives and displacement of many people.
Reaffirming its position, the Youth Congress said its protest was rooted in democratic principles and public interest, and maintained that it would continue to raise issues affecting the people.
