The Manipur People’s Party (MPP) has accused the BJP-led governments at the Centre and in Manipur of failing to protect civilians amid continuing attacks in the state, questioning the deployment and effectiveness of security forces in Naga-inhabited areas.
Addressing the media, MPP General Secretary (Media) Arambam Karamjit Singh said the Centre had deployed around 60 companies of security personnel and two battalions of CRPF Cobra commandos to assist the state government, but questioned why civilians continued to be killed and houses reportedly burned in attacks.
He alleged that Kuki militants had killed civilians and carried out attacks despite the presence of security forces, and questioned why such incidents continued if the government had deployed forces to contain the violence.
Karamjit also referred to the deaths of more than 250 people and the displacement of thousands since the violence began in May 2023, alleging that many internally displaced persons remained unable to return home.
Referring to the recent killing of six Naga civilians, he questioned the government’s response and demanded accountability for those responsible.
The MPP leader also criticised the Suspension of Operations (SoO) arrangement with Kuki armed groups, alleging that ground rules had been violated. He demanded that the government either strictly enforce the SoO ground rules or reconsider continuation of the agreement.
Karamjit said the MPP wanted the state government to use its constitutional powers and security apparatus to protect civilians and territorial integrity, while accusing the BJP governments of failing to adequately address the continuing violence.
