Imphal, Jan 24: Of the 164 children who were drop out of school due to the construction of Mapithel Dam, the Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights has directed concern authority for providing free education to 80 children.
The children were drop out of the school as their family members have been put jobless due to the effect of the Mapithel Dam construction, said a report of the MCPCR.
The report said that parents of these children earn money by collecting sand and stones from the river. However, they could no longer continue their work as the river flow has been blocked by the construction of the Mapithel dam in 2015 .
The people of the two villages namely Nungbram village and Leirongthel Pitra, 36 km away from Imphal, currently does not have any source of income to support their family or to afford educational expenditure of their children.
The Commission along with Manipur Alliance for Child Rights (MACR), Civil Society Coalition on Human Rights and UN, Manipur (CSCHR) surveyed the villages and recomends the coordinator of the Legal Aid Clinic of Nungbram and headmaster of the school, to start admission process for at least 80 students in the nearest government school “Kamuching Government Junior High School” at Kamuching village.
