MP Bimol Akoijam leaves for Delhi after police summons in JNU case

Congress MP from Inner Manipur Angomcha Bimol Akoijam left Imphal for Delhi today in response to a police summons in connection with sexual harassment allegations at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), asserting that justice would prevail.

Speaking to reporters before his departure, Akoijam said his fight would extend beyond the allegations against him to the injustices and suffering endured by the people of Manipur over the decades.

“I am going there because there is a police summons. Don’t worry, justice will be done. This is the beginning of undoing all injustices that my people have faced over the decades,” he said.

He added that he would fight against both the allegations levelled against him and the wider suffering of his people.

The development comes after Vasant Kunj North Police in Delhi pasted a notice outside Akoijam’s residence on Wednesday in connection with the case.

JNU dismissed Akoijam from service with immediate effect on October 9, following an inquiry into allegations of sexual harassment by 11 female students. The university stated that its Internal Committee had recommended major punishment based on its findings.

Akoijam was associated with the Centre for the Study of Social Systems under the School of Social Sciences at JNU.

Delhi Police registered an FIR on October 11 at Vasant Kunj North Police Station following a complaint lodged by JNU Chief Security Officer. The case was registered under Sections 75, 75(1)(i), 75(1)(iv) and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
