Member of Parliament from Inner Manipur Parliamentary Constituency, Bimol Akoijam, has accused the state government of failing to act decisively in connection with the abduction and killing of six Liangmei Naga civilians at Lielon Vaiphei village in Kangpokpi district, alleging that governmental inaction has contributed to a climate of impunity.
The MP made the remarks during a meeting with survivors and family members affected by the recent incident, in which several civilians were reportedly abducted by suspected armed militants. While some of the abducted individuals were later released, six others were allegedly killed in a brutal manner.
During the interaction, survivors recounted their experiences and shared details of the incident with the MP. According to reports, three women who were among those abducted are currently undergoing treatment at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Imphal, after suffering severe trauma following the incident. The women also reportedly made disturbing allegations regarding their treatment while in captivity. These claims have not been independently verified, and no official confirmation has been issued by investigating authorities.
Addressing the gathering, Bimol Akoijam expressed concern over what he described as the government’s failure to take prompt action despite allegations that survivors had identified individuals allegedly involved in the abduction and killings.
“The government may not have directly committed the crime, but if it allows such atrocities to occur without taking appropriate action against those responsible, it cannot absolve itself of responsibility,” the MP reportedly stated.
Drawing a distinction between direct involvement and accountability through omission, Akoijam argued that governments have a duty to protect citizens and ensure justice. Failure to act against perpetrators, he said, raises serious questions about governance, law enforcement and the rule of law.
The MP further maintained that the absence of visible action by the authorities has deepened the anguish of the victims’ families and generated concerns among the public regarding the pace and effectiveness of the investigation.
Expressing solidarity with the bereaved families, Akoijam assured them that he would pursue the matter at the national level. He said the issue would be raised during the forthcoming session of Parliament and called for a thorough, impartial and time-bound investigation into the incident.
