Mortal remains of MLA Vungzagin Valte reaches Churachandpur; Large number of people pay last respect

The mortal remains of Manipur MLA Vungzagin Valte reached Churachandpur in the early hours of Monday, drawing large numbers of mourners who lined the roads to pay their last respects to the departed leader.
The body of the Thanlon Assembly Constituency legislator entered Manipur through the Tuivai River border between Mizoram and Manipur before proceeding towards his native place. His mortal remains are expected to be kept at his residence at Dorcas Veng later in the evening to enable the public to offer homage. The funeral service of the 62-year-old legislator is likely to be held tomorrow.
Vungzagin Valte passed away on February 21 at Medanta Medicity in Gurugram, where he had been undergoing advanced medical treatment. He was airlifted to New Delhi on February 8 after his health condition deteriorated.
The MLA had been suffering from serious health complications since May 4, 2023, when he was attacked a day after ethnic violence broke out in Manipur on May 3, 2023. The assault left him critically injured. Since then, he remained under prolonged medical care, with his condition fluctuating over the past several months.
As the mortal remains were brought back to Churachandpur, emotional scenes were witnessed along the route. Various civil society organisations and community groups organised tribute programmes. The body was received by leaders and members of the Zomi Council and the Zomi Youth Association, besides community leaders and supporters.
At Sinzawl village, the cortege halted at the community hall where villagers, village authority members and residents offered floral tributes and prayers. From there, the procession moved towards Thanlon subdivisional headquarters via the NEC road, with people standing along the highway to offer flowers and pay homage.
The procession was expected to reach Churachandpur town around 11 am before the body is taken to his residence at Dorcas Veng in the evening.
