Monsoon Parliament session stormed by opposition demand for Operation Sindoor, Pahalgam attack, triggering adjournments

The first day of Parliament’s Monsoon Session was plunged into chaos as heavy sloganeering by Opposition MPs demanding immediate discussion on Operation/ Sindoor and the April/ 22 Pahalgam terror attack led to the Lok Sabha being adjourned multiple times and the Rajya Sabha stalling amid similar disruptions. Opposition benches accused the government of suppressing debate and walked out, with Congress Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi claiming it was his basic right to speak, criticizing the Chair for running proceedings predominantly in favour of government voices.
Following the national anthem and initial tributes—including to the Pahalgam victims and those affected by the Air India crash—both houses attempted to begin Question Hour. However, the Lok Sabha was first adjourned until noon, then briefly resumed before being adjourned again until 2/ pm and then ultimately until 4/ pm, as unruly scenes continued. In the Rajya Sabha, at least 18 adjournment motions on various issues were rejected, but a suspension of business motion on Operation Sindoor by Congress MP Randeep Surjewala was admitted under Rule 267.
Ahead of the session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a high level meeting with senior ministers, emphasizing Parliament’s readiness to discuss sensitive issues. BJP MPs, including Kangana Ranaut and Sanjay Jaiswal, defended the decorum of the House, stating that the Opposition’s disruptions were derailing parliamentary procedure, while Union minister Ramdas Athawale affirmed that the government was prepared to debate both Operation Sindoor and the Pahalgam attack and that Opposition MPs would be permitted to speak once Question Hour concluded.
Ministerial responses in Rajya Sabha included civil aviation Minister K/ Rammohan/ Naidu’s clarifications regarding the Air India Ahmedabad crash probe, stating that the AAIB panel included experts and that all victims—on board or on ground—received equitable assistance.
The first day of the Monsoon Session concluded in disarray, with key legislative business—including bills and debate notices—deferred to subsequent sittings. The Opposition has made it plain that unless Parliament addresses their calls for substantive discussion on Operation Sindoor and the Pahalgam atrocity, disruptions will define the remainder of this session.
