An Imphal court on Saturday sentenced two persons to five days in prison for killing a monkey.
With a double barrel gun, the duo — AS Mahai and K Andrew Kom from Imphal — killed the simian at Paomai Colony here on March 30, case dossiers said. They were booked under the provisions of Wildlife Protection Act (WPA) 1972.
Chief judicial magistrate (Imphal East) remanded the two in police custody for five days, enabling the cops to quiz them to extract details on the motive behind killing. Found guilty, the court sentenced the duo to five days imprisonment with a fine of Rs 10,000 each. The court also announced a cash reward of Rs 5,000 for a police officer for his timely action in arresting the two convicts.
In another case, a man who was arrested with the skin and a severed head of a python recently, has been sentenced to three years in prison. In its verdict passed a few days ago, chief judicial magistrate (Chandel) had also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on P Open, a resident of Moreh town bordering Myanmar.
Assam Rifles jawans had apprehended Open with the rare animal parts before handing him over to Manipur forest officials, a source said.
