Imphal, May 4: Students of Modern College, Porompat, Imphal East, today staged a sit-in-protest demanding sufficient number of teachers in the geography department. Speaking to the media persons, Robert Touthang, General Secretary of Students’ Union of Modern College (SUMC) said that only two geography teachers are teaching the 698 students and the students have been suffering for the past two years due to the shortage of teachers. After 10 months the two teachers will retire from their jobs, after which the geography department will be defunct, he added. Robert alleged that on May 2 the union has sent a proposal to the additional director at the directorate but the director turn it down and their problems has been ignored till date. Such indifferent director should be dismissed from the position by the authority concern, he added. Robert also said that examination is drawing near but the syllabus has not yet been covered. The college also does not have a librarian too, he complained. The students urged the authority concern and the government to meet their demands within 48 hours and forwarded a threat that failure to heed them will lead to the shutdown of A-Block of the college and even an examination boycott.
