Mob thrash policeman for assaulting man at gunpoint

Imphal, March 17: A policeman was seriously wounded after an irate mob thrashed him along with two other colleagues for allegedly assaulting a man at gunpoint at Yumnam Huidrom yesterday evening. The policeman has been identified as Th Mahendra (30), son of Th. Tomcha of Singjamei Thongam Leikai. Presently he is attached with the Myang Imphal Police Commando Unit.

According to reports, it is said that Mahendra conducted some indecent act while attending ‘Thabal Chongba’ at Yumnam Huidrom Makha Leikai. When one Yumnam Budhi (48), s/o (L) Ibotombi of Yumnam Huidrom Makha Leikai, who was a volunteer, tried to stop him from doing so, he replied ‘Do you want to know who I am?’  Mahendra left the site following a grudge between the two at around 8.30 pm. At around 11.30 pm Mahendra came at the residence of Budhi with two other colleagues armed with a Pistol and an AK Riffle and assaulted Budhi and his cousins namely Yumnam Premananda, Yumnam Momocha alias Pradipkumar and Yumnam Shamungou at gun point.

After beating them black and blue Mahendra and his two colleagues tried to escape from the site. However, they were caught by the mob and thrashed badly. Mahendra sustained serious injury in mob action and was evacuated to Shija Hospitals Imphal.

The two weapons carried by them had been handed over to concern police station by Wangoi Police Station.
