MNPC demands independent probe, arrest of perpetrators, review of SoO pact

The Meitei Naga Protection Committee (MNPC) has demanded an independent, impartial and time-bound investigation into the killing of three Meitei civilians at Sunurok Uyok, Khongban Tangkhul, and the immediate arrest and prosecution of all those responsible, irrespective of their affiliation or status under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement.

In a statement condemning the alleged killing by Kuki militants operating under the SoO arrangement at around 9:30 am on October 19, the MNPC also called for an urgent comprehensive review of the agreement, citing concerns over its enforcement and the alleged movement of armed cadres.

The committee demanded strict monitoring of designated camps, verification of cadres and weapons, legal action against violations of the agreement, and immediate preventive security measures in vulnerable areas to protect civilians from further attacks.

Questioning the effectiveness of the SoO arrangement, the MNPC said an agreement intended to suspend hostilities must not become a licence for violence or a shield against prosecution. It maintained that the presence of sophisticated weapons and the alleged involvement of cadres covered by the agreement in a deadly attack raised serious questions about monitoring and enforcement.

The committee called for corrective measures to address loopholes in the arrangement, stressing that no political agreement or security policy could override the law or justify the killing of innocent civilians.

The MNPC also urged the authorities to ensure immediate and adequate medical treatment for those injured in the attack and take urgent steps to prevent further loss of civilian lives.

Extending condolences to the bereaved families and solidarity with the injured, the committee said accountability was essential to securing justice for the victims and restoring public confidence.

It warned that silence or inaction would deepen public distrust, reiterating its demand for justice, protection of vulnerable communities and an end to impunity.
