MNPC condemns killing of 7 civilians, demands justice

The Meitei Naga Protection Committee (MNPC) has condemned the killing of seven civilians, including six Nagas and one Nepali, in Kamjong, Kangpokpi and Ukhrul districts, and demanded an impartial, time-bound investigation into the incidents.

In a statement, the committee alleged that Kuki armed militants operating under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) arrangement were involved in the attacks, which reportedly included the burning of houses and the killing and removal of livestock.

The MNPC expressed particular concern over reports that Ajinpou Ringkangmai was beheaded and his severed head taken away. It urged the authorities to recover the remains immediately and hand them over to the family to enable the performance of the funeral and last rites.

The committee called on the governments of India and Manipur to clarify whether the alleged perpetrators belonged to groups covered by the SoO arrangement and whether its ground rules had been violated. It demanded action against those found responsible.

The MNPC also raised concerns over what it described as unequal application of the law, urging authorities to ensure that arrests and summonses were based on evidence and lawful procedures.

The committee demanded stronger security and early-warning systems in Naga-inhabited villages, an investigation into possible negligence by security and administrative authorities, and compensation, relief and rehabilitation for affected families.

It also called for the identification, arrest and prosecution of all those responsible, including alleged planners and facilitators, and urged the authorities to publicly disclose the steps being taken.

Extending condolences to the bereaved families, the MNPC appealed to all communities to remain united and avoid unverified claims and retaliatory violence. It stressed that justice, accountability and equal protection under the law were essential for lasting peace.
