Imphal, Sept 21:

The Meitel (Meetei) Tribe Union (MMTU) has intensified its efforts to include the Meetei community in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list, launching a nationwide campaign focusing on the political, economic, social, and land rights of the community.
As part of this initiative, MMTU representatives met with National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) member Nirupama Chakma and Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha National President Rashree Chaudhuri.
In a statement, MMTU’s Mutum Churamani highlighted that the Meetei community has long been advocating for inclusion in the ST list. During the meeting, Nirupama Chakma acknowledged the significance of the demand and noted that the inclusion could address long-standing issues affecting the community in North-East India. She emphasized that the campaign should serve as a platform to promote peace and unity while addressing the concerns of marginalized groups in the region.
Rashree Chaudhuri, during her meeting with the delegation, expressed her support for the Meetei community’s demand, calling it an urgent matter. She noted that the Meetei people have faced historical injustices, and their inclusion in the ST list would rectify some of these wrongs. Chaudhuri also stated that this recognition is crucial for the community’s survival and preservation under the Indian Constitution, drawing parallels with the protection granted to indigenous groups by the United Nations.
The delegation also submitted memorandums to relevant ministers, political leaders and social activists.
