Former Minister and Khurai MLA Leishangthem Susindro Meitei, popularly known as Yaima, has urged people to assess political candidates on the basis of their work for public welfare and development rather than electoral politics.
Susindro made the remarks while addressing a political meeting in Khurai, where he questioned the development work undertaken by candidates who are seeking votes from the constituency.
He said politics should be pursued with public welfare as its primary objective and warned against using political activities merely for electoral gains.
Referring to commitments made in the previous election manifesto, Susindro cited the proposed planting of one lakh saplings and construction of a flyover at Lamlong, and said efforts were being made to translate the commitments into actual works.
He also referred to the earlier announcement of providing iPads to students, saying the initiative was conceived in view of the difficulties faced by students during the COVID-19 pandemic. He said the matter later became subject to legal proceedings following a challenge by a rival candidate and that the case is scheduled for hearing before the Supreme Court on September 25.
On welfare measures, Susindro said 874 new beneficiaries had been provided Cheng Cards, taking coverage in the constituency to around 80 per cent. He also said that under a target to construct 500 houses, more than 100 houses had already been completed.
Susindro further called for separate committees to be formed to facilitate work for newly enrolled beneficiaries and urged people to cooperate in implementing government welfare schemes.
He said government benefits were meant for the people and not for individual political interests, adding that an MLA should undertake development works and ensure that welfare schemes reach the intended beneficiaries.
