MLA Arunkumar urges household-level action for environmental conservation

Wangkhei MLA Thangjam Arunkumar Singh today stressed that environmental conservation must begin at the household level, calling on people to properly manage single-use plastics and solid waste to reduce pollution and protect the environment.

Speaking at the fourth tree plantation programme organised by the Association of Manipuri Students’ Association Pune (MSAP) Alumni, Manipur, at Hatta Golapati, the MLA said planting trees along roadsides would help improve the environment, conserve rivers and enhance green cover. Referring to the effects of climate change, including irregular rainfall and rising temperatures, he urged people to take responsibility for protecting and nurturing planted saplings.

The plantation drive was organised by the MSAP Alumni in collaboration with the Golapati Hatta Youth Volunteers Organization, Golapati Educational Social & Cultural Development Organization and the Central Forest Division as part of its annual environmental conservation initiative.

Around 200 volunteers participated in the programme, during which 600 saplings of various species were planted along the Imphal River from Minuthong to Kangla Nongpok Thong near Torban. The Forest Department tagged each sapling with a QR code bearing the name of the planter to facilitate monitoring and maintenance.
