The 67th birth anniversary of Irengbam Chaoren, the former president of the Revolutionary Peoples’ Front (RPF), was commemorated today at the Manipur University Auditorium Hall. The event was organized by the Irengbam Chaoren Memorial Trust, attracting a packed audience from various communities who gathered to pay their respects to the departed leader.
Attendees paid rich floral tributes to Chaoren’s portrait, honoring his legacy within the context of Manipur’s historical struggles. A two minutes silence was obserbed as a mark of respect to the departed soul. The event also featured the distribution of prizes for an essay competition held in connection with the anniversary, celebrating the contributions of young thinkers to the discourse surrounding Manipur’s identity and history.
A key highlight of the event was a memorial lecture delivered by Dr. Arambam Noni, an Assistant Professor at DMU. In his address, Dr. Noni explored the complex socio-political landscape of Manipur, emphasizing the need for a solution rooted in the vision of the state as articulated by the late RPF leader.
Addressing the challenges to Manipur’s unity, Dr. Noni reminded the UTI Posseditus Jury that both external and internal forces are incapable of dividing Manipur, which is bound by the agreement that facilitated its merger into the Union of India, alongside established political and territorial boundaries. His comments underscored the enduring spirit of resilience among the people of Manipur and the necessity of a unified approach to navigate the state’s ongoing challenges.
The memorial function was attended by Prof. N. Joykumar Singh, Retd. Professor, Department of History, Manipur University as Chief Guest. Irengbam Bilashini, President, Irengbam Chaoren Memorial Trust (ICMT) presided over the function. Dr. Dhanabir Laishram, Social Scientist attended as Special Invitee while Thao Jatra Chothe, Chief of Lamlang Hupi Chothe Village, Bishnupur, K. Yaima Maring, President, Maring Uparup Assembly, K Sani Alexander Mao, Advisor, Mao Union, Imphal, Ms. Neichung Chiru, Chiru Tribe Union – N.E.I., R. Boipu Koireng, President, Koireng Youth Organization, Manipur, Arshad Beisamayum, Convenor, Meitei Pangal Khunthok Ningsing Thouram Committee attended as Guests of honour.
