Imphal, Aug 30:
Meitei Leima, a prominent women’s organization, has strongly voiced its opposition to efforts aimed at disintegrating Manipur, following the rally organized by the Kuki community on August 31. In response, Meitei Leima has organized a strike demanding that the Meitei community be granted Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, while simultaneously calling for the removal of the Kuki community from the ST list.
The organization condemned the circulation of an unverified audio recording, which has been widely shared in an attempt to portray the Meitei community in a negative light. Meitei Leima believes that this audio recording is being used as a tool to manipulate public opinion and to justify the protest organized by the Kukis.
The ongoing conflict, which began with a tribal rally on May 3, 2023, has seen a series of violent incidents, with the Kuki community being accused of instigating unrest. According to Meitei Leima, in the name tribals, the Kukis escalated the tension.
The situation has been further aggravated by the spreading of the aforementioned audio recording, which Meitei Leima claims is part of a deliberate strategy to incite further violence and disrupt the peace in Manipur. In light of these developments, the organization has called for a unified response from the Meitei community, urging them to come together to protect the integrity of Manipur.
Meitei Leima has planned a statewide strike on August 31, during which they will close markets, and halt all activities in protest against the perceived attempts to divide Manipur. The organization has also urged all citizens to participate in the protest and to show their solidarity with the Meitei community.
