The Meitei Alliance has issued a fervent appeal to address the severe issue of coercion and solicitation of money by various unaccountable armed groups in Manipur. They emphasized that these demands, purportedly for funding patriotic activism, are reaching unbearable levels and are severely impacting both individual livelihoods and the broader economy.
The Alliance highlighted that entrepreneurs, traders, and shop owners, who are crucial to the state’s economic fabric, are among the hardest hit. “Many are being forced to shut down their operations or are teetering on the brink of bankruptcy. This economic strain is leading to casualties, frustrations, chaos, divisions, conflicts, and unrest within the society”, it said.
The Meitei Alliance stated that any armed group genuinely committed to the people’s cause would not undermine the economy and the livelihood of common citizens. In light of this, they appealed to the concerned armed groups, the government, and civil organizations at local, community, and state levels to take immediate initiatives to address this pressing issue.
