A sit-in protest was held at Chanam Purkhi Community Hall following an alleged attempt to carry out a bomb attack at the residence of Professor Chinglen Maisnam at Chingakham Liwa Road in Singjamei, Imphal West.
Speaking during the protest, Moirangthem Tapasini, president of the Liwa Ideal Women Association, said the incident reportedly occurred between 6.30 pm and 7 pm when an unidentified person allegedly attempted to attack Professor Chinglen Maisnam’s residence. She said a Kakwa police patrol subsequently arrived at the spot and apprehended the suspect.
M. Tapasini said the family of Professor Chinglen Maisnam was out of station at the time of the incident. Appealing for restraint, she urged people to engage in dialogue and seek a peaceful solution rather than resorting to threats.
Describing Professor Maisnam as a respected resource person, she said she found it difficult to believe that he would engage in activities detrimental to society.
Meanwhile, Imphal West district police have apprehended a 35-year-old man in connection with the alleged attack. The accused, identified as K. Rosal of Brahmapur Thangapatmapal, was reportedly caught while attempting to hurl a bomb at the professor’s residence on Tuesday night.
Police recovered one hand grenade from his possession.
Police subsequently produced the accused before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West, who remanded him to seven days of police custody for further investigation.
