Imphal, July 28:
The Meetei Erol Eyek Loinasillol Apunba Lup (MEELAL) has intensified its campaign to promote Meetei Mayek (Meetei script) awareness in Kangleipak. The group has been actively encouraging the public to use Meetei Mayek in banners and advertising signboards. They urged everyone to replace non-Meetei scripts with Meetei Mayek to foster cultural preservation.
On July 27, 2024, MEELAL members inspected various shops in Khuman Lampak, advising shop owners to use Meetei Mayek. Despite their efforts, they found that some people were not complying. Later, MEELAL negotiated with the shop owners.
MEELAL provided a contact number for reporting such violations, urging people to report non-compliance so they could take further action.
In response to a public notice from the All Naga Business Association (ANBA), which warned MEELAL against forcing their agenda on the public, MEELAL expressed its commitment to the cause. They stated that they would not be deterred by ANBA’s notice.
DESAM’s statemeng reteriated that in 2005, DESAM members conducted a campaign, resulting in the arrest of 500 activists of MEELAL. This movement eventually led to the introduction of Meetei Mayek in schools from 2006.
