Imphal, Dec 9:

The Manipur International Youth Centre (MIYC), in collaboration with the All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU), organized a program today at Thangjing Hall, Manipur Press Club, focusing on “Media and International Humanitarian Law.” The event brought together journalists, youth leaders, and other stakeholders to discuss the critical role of media in ensuring adherence to international humanitarian principles amidst ongoing conflicts.
The keynote address highlighted the responsibility of media professionals in reporting violations of International Humanitarian Law (IHL). The discussions emphasized the significance of educating the public about IHL and holding power to account in the face of conflict. Speakers noted that the role of media is particularly crucial in Manipur, where recent turmoil has underscored the need for accurate and ethical journalism.
Challenges faced by journalists in covering IHL violations were a key focus of the discussions. Issues such as hostile environments, censorship, intimidation, ethical dilemmas, and restricted access to information were underscored, citing recent incidents in the region, including violence in Tengnoupal District and Jiribam.
