The Editors’ Guild Manipur (EGM), in collaboration with the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Government of Manipur, organized a one-day media workshop on the theme “Media as a Force Multiplier for Climate Action” at Classic Grande, Chingmeirong.
The event was attended by Arun Kumar Sinha, Principal Secretary of Forest, Environment, and Climate Change, Government of Manipur, as the Chief Guest. Khogendra Khomdram, President of Editors’ Guild Manipur, presided over the function, while T. Brajakumar, Director of the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Government of Manipur, along with Bijoy Kakchingtabam, President of the All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union, and Peter Adani, President of the Hill Journalists’ Union, were present as Guests of Honour. Editors from various media houses, journalists, and staff from the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change also participated in the workshop.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Guest Arun Kumar Sinha emphasized the urgency of addressing climate change, stating that unchecked human activities and developmental projects are accelerating its impact globally. He highlighted the importance of spreading awareness about climate change and the need to protect biodiversity. He further noted that the Government of India has undertaken various initiatives to combat climate challenges and build climate resilience through multiple pilot projects.
He stressed the crucial role of the media in raising public awareness and educating people on climate adaptation and mitigation strategies. He urged media professionals to actively contribute to climate action by disseminating information on sustainable practices and environmental conservation.
A technical session followed the inaugural function, moderated by Ahongsanbam Mobi. The session featured expert presentations by Pradip Phanjaobam, Editor of Imphal Review of Arts and Politics, on “Media and Climate Change”; T. Brajakumar, Director of the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, on “State Climate Policy”; and E. Bijoy, a retired professor, on “Impact of Climate Change on the Economy”.
The workshop aimed to equip media professionals with knowledge and strategies to enhance climate action awareness and strengthen their role as key communicators in addressing environmental issues.
