The All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) and Manipur State AIDS Control Society (MACS) jointly organized a Media Sensitization Programme on “Ethics of Media Reporting on HIV and AIDS” at Loktak Hall, Manipur Press Club, today.
The programme aimed to educate journalists on responsible reporting of HIV/AIDS-related issues while ensuring accuracy, sensitivity, and adherence to ethical guidelines. Shamim Ahmad Shah, Project Director of MACS, attended the event as the Chief Guest, while AMWJU President Bijoy Kakchingtabam presided over the session.
During the technical session, Omajit Leishanthem, DA (IEC & MS), delivered a talk on the “HIV and AIDS (Prevention & Control) Act, 2017.” He emphasized the legal protections for people living with HIV/AIDS and the responsibility of the media in disseminating correct information without stigmatization.
Phanjaobam Langamba Meitei, Assistant Director (D&P), MACS, spoke on “Ethics of Media Reporting on HIV and AIDS.” He highlighted the importance of maintaining confidentiality, using appropriate terminology, and avoiding sensationalism when covering stories related to HIV/AIDS.
The programme stressed the need for media professionals to play a proactive role in spreading awareness, combating misinformation, and ensuring that persons affected by HIV/AIDS are not subjected to discrimination. Participants actively engaged in discussions, sharing their views on improving media coverage of health issues in Manipur.
AMWJU and MACS reaffirmed their commitment to promoting ethical journalism and fostering collaboration between the media and health organizations to create a more informed and compassionate society.
