National Sports University Vice-Chancellor Daljit Singh Chawdhary (Retd. IPS) visited the Manipuri Pony Breeding Farm at Lamphelpat and reviewed its facilities and efforts to preserve the rare indigenous Manipuri Pony.
During the visit, Manipuri Pony Society president Prof. Ch. Priyoranjan highlighted the joint efforts of the Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association, Manipur Equestrian Association (MEA) and Manipuri Pony Society to preserve Manipur’s equine heritage and promote polo and equestrian sports.
MEA secretary general N. Ibungochoubi renewed the association’s earlier request to introduce equestrian as an academic subject at the National Sports University. Chawdhary responded positively and indicated that the university could hold consultations with the MEA and allied organisations on developing the proposal.
The Vice-Chancellor said Manipur’s youth have significant potential in equestrian sports and that sustained training and international-standard infrastructure could help develop the discipline into a medal-winning sport.
He also said areas of collaboration, including research, academic programmes and practical training, could be explored through the appropriate university platform.
