MCI likely to question appointment of JNIMS Director who does not possess required qualification

Medical Council of India (MCI) is likely to serve so cause notice to the Governing body of the state government dream project – Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Science (JNIMS) over the appointment of an in-charge Director who does not possess minimum academic qualification provided by the MCI. After the force retirement of Prof. M Shyamo Singh, on April 27, 2015 following complaints from the teaching community, para medics and nurses of the institution the governing body of JNIMS had not appointed any director but the post has been looked after by Commissioner Health Dr. Suresh Babu. Dr. Suresh Babu is a qualified bureaucrat but he does not possess any medical qualification required for the post. The governing body of JNIMS might have asked him to look after the post until a Director has been field but it is now almost 2 years and no qualified Director has been called to fill the post.
According to MCI the Director should possess the recognized postgraduate medical qualification and other academic qualification from a recognized institution with a minimum of ten years’ teaching experience as Professor/Associate Professor/Reader in a medical college/Instt. Out of which at least five years should be as Professor in a department. Preference for these appointments may be given to the Heads of the Departments.
Now, what worried the Imphal Times is the fate of the MBBS students presently studying at JNIMS. JNIMS is rightly having tough time to sort out any loopholes which might create an obstacles to the approval of MCI.
