Imphal, Nov 12: In yet another blow to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), the Medical Council of India (MCI) has derecognized the MS Degree Course of the Institution. RIMS now have 16 seats for the post graduate course as approved by the Manipur University. The decision to derecognize the post graduate course was taken in a meeting of the Post Graduate Medical Education Committee of MCI held on September 30 at 10.30 am in the office of the Medical Council of India, Pocket-14, Sector-8, Dwarka, New Delhi.

Reason given for derecognizing the MS (General Surgery) course are – 1) Bed occupancy is 60% on day of assessment, 2) SICU is shared with general ICU which is under renovation, 3) Dr. G.S. Moirangthem, Professor & HOD has no experience as Associate Professor in General Surgery and therefore his promotion as Professor is not as per Regulations. His experience in Gastro Intestinal Surgery department cannot be equated with that in General Surgery department and 4) Weekly operative load is only 10 Major and 20 Minor Surgeries, which is very less.

Meanwhile, Vision Foundation Manipur has blamed Dr. G.S. Moirangthem for the mess. In a press hand out the foundation said that because of him fate of the students presently undergoing the post graduate course in MS (General Surgery) could not be certain.
