Manipur Youth League (MAYOL) celebrated its 3rd Foundation Day at Chanura Leikol, Khurai Angom Leikai, on Monday, with its president Koijam Suresh calling upon the people of Manipur to exercise their voting rights responsibly and rise above narrow political interests in the upcoming elections.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the celebration, Suresh said the 13th Manipur Legislative Assembly elections, scheduled for March 2027, would provide an important opportunity for the people to determine the future direction of the state.
He cautioned that Manipur could face further instability if voters failed to make thoughtful and responsible choices, emphasising that electing capable and accountable leaders was essential for building a peaceful, prosperous and progressive society.
Referring to the prolonged crisis and various challenges faced by the state over the years, Suresh said the people had endured numerous unfortunate incidents and hardships. He stressed the need for collective efforts to prevent further deterioration of the situation and restore stability in the state.
He further observed that, in a democratic system, the power to form a government rests with the people through the electoral process. Voters, therefore, should put aside narrow interests and political affiliations while exercising their franchise and instead choose leaders committed to public welfare.
Suresh also underscored the importance of political awareness among citizens, particularly the youth, in ensuring responsible leadership and strengthening democracy.
The foundation day celebration was attended by Prof. W. Nabakumar, former Head of the Department of Anthropology, Manipur University; Ashem Prince, founding president of MAYOL; and Longjam Ratan, chief adviser of the organisation, among others.
As part of the celebration, a discourse was organised on the theme “Politics: Vote for National Regeneration”.
The session was moderated by Ahongshangbam Mobi. Akoijam Shethajit spoke on “Role of Citizens in a Functional Democracy”, Dr. Dhanabir Laishram addressed “Youth and Politics Relationship”, while Yumnam Rupachandra delivered a lecture on “The Role of Media in the Ongoing Campaign”.
