Residents of eight Leikais in Mayang Langjing have reiterated their demand for updation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) before the conduct of the Census, at a protest meeting held at Mayang Langjing Community Hall today.
The meeting was organised by the Mayang Langjing Semgat Nupi Lup under the leadership of the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD), with residents from the eight Leikais and members of the JFD taking part.
Participants questioned what they described as the government’s reluctance to identify alleged illegal immigrants and maintained that the NRC should be updated before the Census. They said such an exercise was necessary to protect the interests of future generations and address concerns relating to undocumented migration.
The protesters also sought a clear assurance from the JFD that its representatives would visit New Delhi by the end of September to press the Centre for updation of the NRC, with 1951 retained as the base year. The demand is in line with the JFD’s earlier call for a formal announcement by the Centre on updating the NRC before the Census.
The meeting also raised questions over the alleged lack of transparency in communications between the State Government and the Centre. Participants sought disclosure of copies or details of letters reportedly sent to the Centre.
The gathering resolved to continue the movement until the demands are addressed. Participants said they would remain committed to the agitation despite possible consequences and warned that any move to conduct the Census without first resolving the NRC issue would be opposed.
