Imphal, Feb 20:

A mass rally is being organized from Sambei, Imphal East to the Governor’s Bungalow on February 22, demanding the abrogation of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement between the Government of India and Kuki militant groups. Organized by the Iramdam Kanba Lup (IKAL), Village Protection Force (VPF), and the United Committee of Pukhao Gram Panchayat and Makeng Dolaithabi Gram Panchayat, the rally aims to highlight concerns regarding the ongoing SoO agreement and a memorandum will be submitted to the Governor demanding SoO abrogation.
Sagolsem Johnson, representing The United Committee of Pukhao Gram Panchayat and Makeng Dolaithabi Gram Panchayat, has urged the people of Manipur, Meira Paibis, organizations, and residents of the Khundrakpam Assembly Constituency to actively participate in the mass rally.
The SoO agreement between the Government of India and various Kuki armed groups is set to expire on February 28, 2024. However, many individuals and groups are calling for its termination, alleging violations of the agreement’s ground rules by Kuki armed groups.
Many section of the people claim that the current SoO pact has inadvertently bolstered militant outfits, facilitated the influx of Kuki migrants, and provided them with training in language and combat skills within their camps, and using illegal migrants as a labor force for illicit activities such as poppy cultivation, arms trafficking, and drug trade. Moreover, the integration of illegal migrants as soldiers has led to the encroachment on reserved and protected forest lands, wildlife sanctuaries, and other protected sites. This expansion has sparked concerns about deforestation and other illegal activities.
