Mao area mountain ranges witness snowfall

The Mountain ranges in Manipur’s Mao area in Senapati district have been witnessing snowfall for the last few days, according to locals.
A resident of Mao said that local youths have been visiting the base camp of Mt Isii, the highest peak of the state, to see the snow-clad mountain ranges.
Liyai Khullen, a border village located about 130km north of Imphal in Senapati also has a similar story of snowfall on Wednesday.
When contacted, Chairman DK Isaac Caasi of Liyai Khullen where the state’s biggest Barak River originates, said that snowfall takes place every year in the village during this time (January-February). Generally, people grow seasonal crops after the snowfall, he said.
Earlier, a video clip showing the Liyai village youths playing in the snow went viral on social media.
Interestingly, the state Chief Minister N Biren Singh also shared a couple of photographs of snowfall at the state’s (Dzuko) base camp and security barrack area in a Facebook post on Wednesday.
On January 16 afternoon, many villages under Senapati district namely Purul, Maiba, Koide and Liyai Khullen besides Somdal village in Ukhrul district had witnessed hailstorms.
The state which recorded the minimum temperature 2.93 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, as per the daily weather report of the Directorate of Environment & Climate Change of the state government, continues to reel under cold weather till Today.
