An Awareness Programme on Cane & Bamboo and its Application organized by Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal, Manipur and Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS), Manipur with supported from Cane and Bamboo Technology Centre (CBTC), Guwahati, Assam under North Eastern Council, Ministry of DoNER, Government of India. was held at Song Song Village, Senapati District yesterday .
MPs of Manipur Dr. R.K. Ranjan and Dr. Lorho S. Pfoze were attended as the Chief Guest and President respectively of the programme. Prof. M. Premjit Singh, Vice Chancellor, Central Agricultural University (CAU), Lamphelpat, Imphal; Prof W. Chandbabu Singh, Registrar, Manipur University; Mr. Heni Kaikho, Chairman, Song Song Village and Mr. Mayanglambam Khelendro Singh, Vice President, The Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS), Manipur were attended as the guests of honour.
Not only Bamboo, Mao is famous for agricultural products in Manipur. That is why Chief guest of the programme, Dr. R.K. Ranjan proposed to establish a Slopeland Research Institute under the initiative of Central Agricultural University and another Hill University the under initiative of Manipur University. The president of the programme, Dr. Lorho S. Pfoze is also willing to set up the high-altitude research institutes under the initiative form Central Agricultural University and Manipur University as soon as possible to decentration of knowledge. Central Agricultural University has already agreed on it, he furthered added. During the programme, apart from the distribution of bamboos, coconuts, avocado, beehive boxes, piglet, sprayers, Chief Minister-gi Hakshelgi Tengbang (CMHT) cards are provided instantly to the villagers. Many demands to organize more Awareness Programme on Cane and Bamboo in the Remaining District of Manipur especially in Tamenglong, Churachandpur, Chandel, Noney, Jiri, Ukhrul, Kangpokpi, Pherzawl and Kamjong districts.
Before the programme is started, both the Members of Parliament of Manipur, Dr. Lorho S. Pfoze and Dr. R.K. Ranjan visited the land subsidence sites. The villagers of the area are taking refugees to the neighbouring areas due to its vulnerable situation. As the preliminary report, the land subsidence might be caused due to the aquifer-system hydrocompaction. It occurs when large amounts of groundwater have been withdrawn and may lead to more surface water-groundwater interaction and excess groundwater withdrawal which in turn may pollute the aquifer, cause land subsidence. However, it needs to study further. During the investigation, there are a geologist and seismologist experts from Manipur University. It will find out the exact cause of subsidence soon.
