Mizoram State Assembly Election, which is scheduled to take place on November 7, 2023 is likely to have a spillover effect from the ongoing Manipur crisis. As per the CEO of Mizoram, the voting will take place across 1,276 polling stations in the state, with 525 urban polling stations, and 751 rural ones.
With as many as 13,000 people, particularly the Kuki Zo community, that fled from the state of Manipur to Mizoram for refuge are likely to play a great role in this election.
A total of 174 candidates are in the fray in the poll-bound state. Most candidates play their politics encircling Manipur’s violence issue. Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) and the Mizo National Front (MNF) which have fielded candidates in all the 40 assembly seats are going to have a keen fight. Whether there will be a BJP or Congress impact on this election is a matter yet to be observed as the MNF is an alliance with the NDA. The BJP fielded candidates in 23 Assembly constituencies. The Congress Party too has fielded candidates in all the constituencies and AAP has fielded 4 seats. There are 27 independent candidates in this election.
In the current assembly, MNF holds 28 seats with six seats for the main opposition Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM). Congress and BJP each have five and one seats in the state assembly, respectively.
Mizoram has a total of 8,51,895 registered voters, out of which, 4,12,969 are male, while 4,38,925 are female. The results of the assembly elections will be declared on December 3, 3023.
