Manipur will carry out the first phase of Census 2027 from August 17, with self-enumeration scheduled until August 31 and houselisting operations to be conducted from September 1 to 30, according to details released by the Centre.
The announcement comes as the nationwide Census exercise is set to begin on April 1 in a phased manner across States and Union Territories. The first phase, known as Houselisting and Housing Census (HLO), will gather data on housing conditions, amenities and household assets through both self-enumeration and field visits by enumerators.
Registrar General and Census Commissioner Mritunjay Kumar Narayan, while briefing the media in New Delhi, said the Census will be conducted in two phases. The second phase, Population Enumeration (PE), will collect demographic, socio-cultural and economic data, including migration and fertility. He added that caste enumeration will also be undertaken during this phase as decided by the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs.
For Manipur, residents will have the option to digitally submit their details during the self-enumeration window from August 17 to 31. This will be followed by house-to-house visits by designated enumerators from September 1 to 30.
Narayan stated that all information collected during the Census will remain confidential and will not be shared with any government or private entity under the Right to Information Act, nor used as evidence in court. He also clarified that no documents will be collected during the exercise.
The Census 2027 will cover all States and Union Territories, and the first set of data is expected to be released in 2027.
