Manipur State Solid Waste Management plan shut down as contractors and workers protest

Impahl, Oct 19: Contractors who were allotted works for construction of infrastructures of the Manipur State Solid Waste Management, Lamdeng in Imphal West along with the workers today shut down the main gate of the compound in protest against non clearance of their pending dues.
One K Naobi, a worker said that the infrastructure of the solid waste management plan started construction from 2009 and completed in the year 2014. After the construction work had been completed the work of the solid waste management plan was handed over to a private firm. However, pending dues for the construction has not been cleared on the ground that government have no fund.
“In 2014 the  officials of PDA and MAHUD Department of Manipur Government handed over the management of the project to a private firm but till today the pending dues of the workers and the contractors have not been cleared on the ground that center has not released any fund”, Naobi said.
He further added that we have work for four years without getting any fees despite the fact that we have to run our families.
The workers threatened to close down the project until their pending dues are not cleared.
Following the agitation garbage collectors of the Imphal city have been facing lot of problem as they were not allowed to dump the collection at the site.
