Manipur showcased its indigenous scented rice varieties, including GI-tagged Chak-Hao, and value-added rice products at the Bharat International Rice Conference (BIRC) 2026, being held at Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, from October 23 to 25.
The Department of Agriculture, Government of Manipur, led by Director Peter Salam, participated in the conference along with entrepreneurs and Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) from the state.
The delegation displayed Chak-Hao (Black Scented Rice), Chak-Hao Angouba (White Scented Rice) and a range of value-added products to highlight Manipur’s indigenous rice heritage and its potential for commercial innovation.
A live culinary demonstration featuring Korean-style kimbaps prepared with both rice varieties drew attention from visitors. The chef engaged for the event demonstrated how the naturally sticky texture of the scented rice could be used in contemporary Asian dishes, including kimbaps and Japanese sushi rolls.
The initiative sought to explore new market opportunities in Delhi and other urban centres while promoting product innovation and stronger market linkages for farmers, FPOs and local entrepreneurs.
Organised by the Indian Rice Exporters Federation (IREF), BIRC 2026 brings together stakeholders across the rice value chain to explore trade, value addition, innovation and domestic and international market opportunities.
Manipur’s participation focused on linking its traditional rice varieties with new culinary applications and market-oriented entrepreneurship.
