Governor of Manipur, Anusuiya Uikey, has emphasized the crucial role of the media in promoting peace, harmony, and brotherhood that transcends caste, religion, and personal interests.
Speaking at the 49th Foundation Day celebration of the Manipur Press Club in Imphal, the Governor stated that this occasion serves as a time for celebration and self-assessment. It also provides an opportunity for members to come together, exchange ideas, reflect on past activities, and discuss possibilities and challenges for the future. The Governor expressed her happiness that the Manipur Press Club is actively promoting literacy and media literacy within society. Recognizing the media as the fourth pillar of democracy, she emphasized that with great respect comes great responsibility.
The Governor stressed the importance of impartial and fearless news broadcasting, highlighting that journalists should present news in its true form rather than sensationalizing it. She also emphasized the need for patience during times of crisis, as well as the qualification and integrity that come with being a journalist. The media plays a vital role in raising awareness within society.
Furthermore, the Governor emphasized that the media should work towards preserving the rich heritage and traditions of the country, promoting democracy, and reminding citizens of their duties. Sensitivity in broadcasting news related to women and children was also emphasized. The Governor commended the state media for presenting events in a balanced manner during times of crisis. She congratulated everyone for their commendable work and acknowledged the resilience of media personnel who do not succumb to threats and pressures. The Governor shared her own motivation and early career experiences in the media. She also donated one lakh rupees for the development of the Manipur Press Club.
During her visit to the Manipur Press Club, the Governor paid respects at the Journalists’ Memorial Pillar and laid the foundation stone of the Manipur Press Colony. She also inaugurated the Media Resource Centre of the Manipur Press Club.
The programme was attended by MAHUD Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, who expressed gratitude to the media fraternity for their indomitable role and efforts in restoring peace and harmony in the state. He urged them to continue contributing their best efforts in the future. Bijoy Kakchingtabam, President of the All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU), Khogendra Khomdram, President of the Editors’ Guild Manipur (EGM), Director of the Information and Public Relations (IPR), Dr. Th. Charanjeet Singh, former office bearers of the Manipur Press Club, and journalists were also present at the programme.
